It’s late autumn around the end of 1980’s, just after the school season has started, but your mind is not at school but somewhere else. You look at the wall clock every now and then. Meanwhile thank god, there are those breaks that you can finally talk with your classmates about something really interesting.

You won’t believe this mate, yesterday I passed through to the final stage! I went all the way to the boss but something happened to (cough) my joystick and lost.. I am telling you I had him, it was the joystick thingy… Get out of here, if you went all the way there, what is the password for the last stage and how did the boss looked like? Well he was big and mean and, and he also, he wanted to kill me… Of course he did, what a perfect description of a boss mate, every boss in every game looks, sort of the same. And what about that password? Well I wrote it down but, it was here somewhere…

As you walk around with your mates, you hear some kids in a corner talking about the latest hits of their favourite pop stars, the latest movie with incredible effects which looked so real. Suddenly you stumble across another company knowing that they are into computer games as well. You are going closer and listen to their conversation.

I am telling you guys this riddle is one of the most difficult I have ever came across all these years, I can’t get past it. Have you tried to mix the padlock with the jar from your inventory? No this is never gonna do the trick!

You are moving away with fast pace, as you realise they are talking about those nonsense adventure games that you spend days just to pass a scene… Boy, I wonder what is the joy with those games you think to yourself.

The ring bells and everybody is going back to the classroom, waiting for the next break to start over. Finally the ring bells for the last time today, you’ve been waiting for that moment since the morning you woke up. You grab your belongings and you are heading home, what a coincidence that the road you took by accident is passing right in front of the computer store in your neighbourhood.

Hello Mr. P, did the game I was telling you the other day came yet? Not yet? Oh okay, I will pass by in a few days then to check again. (Meaning tomorrow after school).

You are home and your mum asks, why did you arrive late again? Your school is 5 minutes away and it took you 20 to come home! You know mum, our teacher wanted to talk to as about maths a bit longer in the end. She didn’t believe you but anyway, you are allowed to pass through her.

You leave everything aside, sitting in front of your most precious belonging and getting ready. Power ON! Yes, the lovely cursor flashes before your eyes, finally the moment of the day! You press rewind and wait, click! The tape is where it is supposed to be, at the very beginning. You start typing by heart the necessary stuff and you are prompted to press play, then of course without any further delays you press play.

The nonsense beeps are filling the room and primary colors are flashing everywhere, about 7 minutes and 36 seconds later you hear your mum screaming at you! This is your last warning, if you don’t come right now to join us for food, this box with letters you are calling a computer is going out of the window!!! You are thinking, last warning? When was the previous one ? Most likely you were so absorbed waiting for the game to load. Yes mum right away, sorry!

Okay buddy you can continue loading the game, while I load some food in my stomach to have strength for my best gameplay ever! The eating process is over and you promise to your mum that you will do your homework, hmm, a bit later.

Yeah, I am back ready to play and destroy anyone and everything on my way! What? What is this nonsense message? Load error NM3039? Oh god not again, for some reason something went wrong and you have to reload the game…

Okay thanks for nothing. You take out the tape and you give it a good blow, here we go again, no matter what I love you little 8 bit fella. Rewind, play etc! Beeps and colors coming up again.

Loading! Beeps and colors!

Loading! More beeps and colors!

Loading! Even more beeps and colors!

You are going to make a coffee…

After 12 minutes and 21 seconds a message appears.

Please insert tape side B and press play to continue.

You know the process, you are waiting patiently (not).

You are going to bring some biscuits too…

Loading! The game’s music tune starts to play!

Loading! The splash screen of the  game makes its appearance from the top, line by line!

Loading! The music continues and the splash screen is half way there!

So far 16 minutes and 56 seconds.

Do I have time to prepare another coffee?

Loading! Music, splash screen etc…

Press F1 for Player 1 or F2 for Player 2, F3 for Options!

It was only after 23 minutes and 34 seconds that you were able to start playing that game. You have that bitter sweet taste, that on one hand you are finally moving the character around with joy, and on the other hand you feel like, god can’t we do that loading thing faster? We don’t have all day you know!!!

Fast forward to 2018. You press the power button, after 12 seconds your operating systems welcomes you! Your games are already pre-installed on your hard drive, you double click the icon on your desktop with that fantastic vintage computer wallpaper. After 6 seconds, before the word “Loading” appears, you are ready to play the game.

This is ridiculous, I don’t have time to prepare coffee while this game Loads.

Where are the good old times ?
